Algar Waterfalls

Wonderful Attraction

Although the coastal city of Torrevieja has many great attractions and a number of golden sand beaches to enjoy, when hiring a car during your holiday, why not make full use of it by visiting a few of the wonderful attractions that can be found outside the city. An extremely popular and beautiful place to visit is Algar Waterfalls. Situated about an hour and a half drive from Torrevieja, Algar can be reached via the N-332 coastal road or the AP-7 motorway, although you will have tolls to pay on the motorway.

Both these routes take you past the party city of Benidorm, and many visitors from Torrevieja make a full day of their journey by spending part of the day in Benidorm and the rest at Algar. Another great option is to spend the day at Algar then enjoy an overnight stay in Benidorm so you can sample the night time delights of this glitzy city such as the numerous bars and clubs or the famous Benidorm Palace.

Protected Wetland Area

Most visitors choose to bring a picnic that can be enjoyed at a number of picturesque resting spots, but as the falls have been declared a protected wetland area, make sure you clear up after you, and keep in mind BBQ’s are strictly prohibited. If you don’t wish to be encumbered by a picnic basket, there is a choice of 5 restaurants in the area, with the fantastic Restaurante Les Fonts situated right next to the falls and offering breathtaking views.

Algar Waterfalls cascade their way through a series of hills and large boulders, forming crystal clear rock pools where you can brave the icy waters with a refreshing dip. There is also a large deep pool with a diving platform that many visitors spend the day at, swimming and sunbathing on the rocks. Throughout the area there are wooden walkways and less substantial paths that can be quite steep, so a decent pair of trainers or hiking boots are advisable.

Cactus Gardens

Algar has a main parking area, tourist office, souvenir shop, first aid station and ablution facilities, as well as an environmental museum and pretty cactus gardens. Another overnight option is the falls camping ground, situated in a picturesque area about a kilometre from the falls. Close to the camp site is Dino Park Algar that forms part of the cactus gardens and is like a mini Jurassic Park. The setting is beautiful with stunning views, tropical plants, swimming pool, picnic areas, snack kiosk and even a mini 3D cinema showcasing these ancient creatures.
