Aitana Safari Park
Family holidays allow us to forget about work for a while, kick back, relax and above all, have fun. With the endless energy kids have, holiday destinations like the coastal city of Torrevieja offer a fantastic selection of exciting attractions and day trips to keep the young ones busy. Although Torrevieja’s beaches and attractions provide for a fun filled holiday, visitors that have access to a vehicle have the opportunity to explore so much more of the beautiful Costa Blanca. Less than an hour and a half drive from the city, near the town of Penáguila, is the wonderful Aitana Safari Park.
Having worked with both lion and elephant in my past, I know just how rewarding it can be to get close to these magnificent creatures, and also how heartbreaking it is to see their numbers declining so rapidly due to the greed of mankind. Aitana Safari Park provides a refuge for animals and mammals from all over the world, and owners of the park, Juan Sevila and Maria Van Soldt are dedicated conservationists with a passion for wildlife. Their dedication and hard work has seen the park grow considerably since it first opened in 1973. It now covers a huge area of 1,5oo,000m2 and is home to some of the most endangered creatures on the planet.
Unlike many other wildlife parks, the size of Aitana allows visitors an experience similar to an African safari where they can explore the park in their own vehicles. There is also the very rewarding experience of being a keeper for the day, where you will be paired with one of the park rangers and carry out the daily duties required to keep the park in tip top condition and the animals well fed and cared for.
Aside from exploring the park in your own vehicle, there are various other tour options available including touring in one of the park’s vehicles with your own personal guide, group tours, and a VIP tour that include a delicious lunch and a visit to the picturesque Guadalest Valley. Visitors don’t need to be part of the VIP tour to enjoy lunch, as the park provides a selection of refreshments, snacks and cooked meals in their restaurant and terrace area.
Not only can you see African animals such as lion, giraffe, elephant, hippo, monkeys and ostrich, there are also animals from Asia, Europe and the Americas at Aitana Safari Park. Among these are the Mackenzie wolf, buffalo, mighty tiger, beautiful jaguar, lynx boreal, Vietnamese pig and a range of snakes and other reptiles. Visitors not doing the VIP tour can still enjoy the beauty of Guadalest Valley and Algar Waterfalls as they are only about a half hour drive from the park. From the town of Penáguila just take the CV-70 and follow the signs for Guadalest.
